Project Overview

Pegasus has secured Listed Building Consent for the Restoration of Southport Pier (LBC) on behalf of Sefton Council, for significant restoration works to the Grade II listed Pier, which is the UK’s second longest Pier.

This permission is a vital initial step towards the future reopening of Southport Pier, a much-loved landmark and pillar of the area’s seaside tourism economy due to its prime central location. The approved works consists of replacing the existing steel superstructure which supports the decked level of the Pier, as well as refurbishing and replacing handrails and other pier furnishings, such as the seating pavilions.

Project Details

Pegasus provided planning and heritage services to Sefton Council, which included producing a Planning Statement and Heritage Statement for the LBC submission, as well as managing and coordinating the application to its successful conclusion. The work was led by Pegasus’ Peter Hopkins, Associate Planner, and Simon Britt, Associate Heritage.

The Heritage Statement set out the full justification for carrying out the necessary works and the degree of harm presented to the Pier.  The submission subsequently obtained the support of Historic England, who recommended to Sefton’s Planners that the application be approved on balance.

Pegasus also advised on all reports required for the submission including terrestrial and marine ecology, with a large section of the Pier being situated directly within several statutory habitat designations covering the intertidal marine environment.

Peter Hopkins, Associate Planner at Pegasus Group, comments:

“We are pleased to have assisted with the successful Listed Building Consent application for Southport Pier’s works, which represents a positive stride towards this much-loved local historic landmark being conserved for future generations.”
