Adriano’s journey to urban design was anything but typical. Having initially started his career as a graphic designer, a chance meeting with an architect at a social gathering led him to consider a new career path.
The encounter led Adriano to study architecture and planning at The University of West England, Bristol and post-graduation he worked in architecture and in construction, but something was missing. While he had an appreciation of the design aspects of architecture and the practicality of construction, neither offered Adriano the chance apply both his planning and design knowledge. Another chance conversation with a future colleague at Pegasus pointed Adriano to an alternative career option and the Pegasus Graduate Scheme.
Adriano found his niche. “Urban design was the sweet spot for me, combining my passion for hands-on work with creative planning, and I’ve been relishing the opportunity to apply my knowledge across a variety of projects,” he says. One of his most rewarding projects involved designing new façade styles for a national house builder, a task that gave him a glimpse into the future of housing design. “It was fascinating to think about what houses will look like in 50 years,” Adriano shares.
The Pegasus Graduate Scheme has provided Adriano with invaluable guidance and support in both his personal life and professional career. From learning about pensions to mastering professional etiquette, the scheme has offered life lessons and skills that were new to him. The guidance and support from his mentor, along with the nurturing environment at Pegasus, have been instrumental in Adriano’s development. “The constant support I’ve received has been key to my growth,” he notes.
Adriano also appreciates the team-oriented culture at Pegasus. “The regular conference calls with the CEO are a great example of how inclusive and welcoming it feels, no matter how senior or junior you are,” he explains.
Networking events have enriched Adriano’s professional journey, allowing him to build ongoing relationships with clients. “I’ve enjoyed developing my relationships with clients, and that’s a skill I’ve learnt on the scheme that will benefit me well into the future,” he says.
Still to decide on a firm career path, Adriano is keen to continue his development and explore opportunities in larger city offices. The variety of roles and types of work available at Pegasus give him confidence in his career path, whatever that looks like. “My experience at Pegasus has given me a solid foundation to feel comfortable in any environment,” he reflects.
Adriano’s advice for future graduates is simple yet powerful: “Have fun and ask questions. Pegasus’ Graduate Scheme is really well set up and organised, which makes it easy to manage and track my development, so I’m not worrying about admin and I’m able to concentrate on the aspects of learning that are really benefiting me and my career.”
