Archaeology

Pegasus Group’s team of archaeology specialists can advise on archaeological remains of all periods, types, designations and locations.

We have expertise covering all periods of the archaeology of the British Isles, from early prehistoric remains through to the archaeology of Cold War landscapes. We are familiar with the challenges of complex stratigraphy in urban contexts and extensive rural sites.

We have a very large amount of experience in designing and negotiating cost-effective programmes of archaeological investigations to provide a proportionate level of information to inform a planning decision, including through desk-based assessment, geophysical survey and targeted evaluation excavation. We can also design and manage schemes of post-determination mitigation works.

In terms of the archaeological fieldwork, Pegasus Group do not carry out any fieldwork themselves. However, we have staff who have many years’ experience of archaeology in the field and using this, we can design cost-effective schemes to look after the clients best interests, timed to reduce compensation costs.

We are able to source competitive quotations from contactors in particular geographical areas and with specialist skill-sets to suit any scheme. The Pegasus Group team can prepare Written Schemes of Investigation (WSI’s) for pre-determination fieldwork (trench evaluation, fieldwalking and geophysical survey) and post-determination evaluation and excavation schemes.

We have excellent knowledge of the law and guidance relating to archaeology.

Services we provide include:

  • Initial constraints and opportunities analysis.
  • Desk-based assessment.
  • Design, source and manage of schemes of pre-determination evaluation, including geophysical survey, fieldwalking and trial trenching.
  • Design, source and manage post-determination mitigation works.
  • Act as Expert Witnesses on matters relating to archaeology.
