“Lilidorei” is an imaginative new adventure village set within the grounds of Alnwick Castle. The village is home to nine Christmas-loving clans and is presided over by the majestic Lord Elfwin, King of Lilidorei, from his residence, Elfwin Drin.
The attraction contains the largest play structure in the world and is truly a sight to behold. The village has been designed to encourage the imagination of both children and adults allowing them to uncover the secret sights and sounds of Lilidorei.
Sustainability has been a key theme during the planning of the project with the whole village being plastic free and crafted from natural materials. The village will also be set within a new forest of 1,300 Nordic Christmas trees.
Challenges overcome
Located in a Grade I Registered Park & Garden and in the setting of several Grade I listed buildings, the team had to be mindful of the potential impact on the historic environment.
We worked closely with Ryder Architecture, Faithful+Gould, Historic England and Northumberland County Council to ensure the structure and landscaping was sensitive to its surroundings. The end result is a magical wonderland that will undoubtedly inspire visitor old and young.
Long term benefits
The £15 million project is set to significantly increase Northumberland’s tourism offer with 280,000 visitors expected each year. This will extend the existing tourism offer in the region by attracting visitors during the normally quieter winter months surrounding Christmas.
Lilidorei will also provide “Free Fridays”, allowing local primary school children to visit free of charge during term time and holidays.
