The Pegasus Group team in the Bracknell Office were instructed to provide planning support for redevelopment of an existing church in Woking for a scheme of bold extensions of larger worship space, a dramatic new church entrance, bookshop, café, youth centre and additional office and meeting space. The existing church is an important Grade II listed building with a prominent position within the centre of Woking. It was therefore important that the proposals respected the historic fabric and use of the building, and this was achieved through consultation with Historic England. Importantly the scheme also provided a high quality public realm and aligned with the vision for future developments planned in central Woking.
Pegasus Group provided support in engaging with local stakeholders including the church parishioners and managing the consultant team to prepare, submit and manage a detailed full application. Key to the project’s success was the attention paid to managing the site’s constraints, including public realm upgrades within the immediate proximity of trees subject to Tree Preservation Orders. Full planning permission was granted under delegated powers with a favourable set of planning conditions, including a 5-year commencement timeframe allowing for the raising of further project funding. The planning permission also importantly confirmed that the extended office space and meeting rooms could be let out to external parties to provide essential income to self-fund the church.
