The Pegasus Group heritage team were commissioned to undertake a Heritage Assessment in support of an application for 450 houses on a site south of Boroughbridge.
The proposed site lay in close proximity to the Scheduled Monument of Aldborough Roman Town, along the alignment of a Roman road and therefore the setting of the Scheduled Monument required specific consideration, as well as the potential for below-ground archaeology possibly relating to the Roman town.
In addition to the preparation of the Heritage Assessment, given the proximity to the scheduled Roman town and the associated potential for nationally important archaeology, archaeological fieldwork was carried out. This was designed and managed by our heritage team to ensure the work was proportionate and sufficient to inform the planning application.
Initially, Historic England objected to the scheme given the potential for the site to contain archaeology relating to the scheduled Roman town. However, following consultation carried out by our heritage team outlining the results of the assessment and the fieldwork, Historic England withdrew their objection.
The scheme was granted planning permission in 2018.
