The Cheltenham Secondary School, located in Leckhampton, Gloucestershire, is a brand new school development catering for 900 pupils, which lies on the fringe of the Cotswold AONB. Pegasus Group were part of a multidisciplinary team, working on behalf of Kier Construction. The layout of the site and location of the new school building was largely landscape led to ensure that the design and layout of the site respected the sensitive setting and challenging site constraints. The landscape design complies with BB103 and follows the clients own school specific brief.
The design includes courtyard areas for socialising, an external covered dinning area, and feature terraced seating which utilises the change in level across the site. Informal soft landscaped areas with orchards, wildflower meadows and a wildlife and habitat garden, offer opportunities for external learning activities as well as ecological enhancements.
Extensive sports provision has been provided to ensure a full sporting curriculum all year round including, grassed rugby, football, athletics, rounders and cricket pitch. A multi use games area providing netball, tennis and basketball provision and a sand filled astro pitch for hockey and football further provides community sports provision.
The site was ecologically sensitive and extensive liaison with the design team and ecologist was required to finalise the final stages of the successful outcome of the planning application in May 2020. Having taken this project from the initial client engagement meeting process with Kier and Gloucestershire County Council, through the planning and tender stages, the design team at Pegasus Group will now supervise the implementation of the landscape works during the construction period, with a project completion date of June 2022 and school opening date in September 2022.
